History of the Estate Glana Castle

the story of Glana Castle

Glana Castle

Enrichment of the vineyard

Glana CastleBuilt in 1870, this charming monument is distinguished by its walls, which combine white limestone with red brick. Monsieur Cayx was its first owner. He established his vineyard by subdividing the Château Saint-Pierre estate, a Fourth Growth Classified in 1855. At that time, the vineyards covered only five hectares. Gabriel Meffre acquired the property in 1961. A renowned nurseryman from the Vaucluse region, he made Château du Glana his new project. He decided to purchase new vines to expand his holdings. To this end, he acquired various parcels from Château Lagrange, a Third Growth Classified in Saint-Julien. Within a few years, he managed to bring together a total of forty-three hectares. Today, his son, Jean-Paul Meffre, and his grandsons, Ludovic and Julien, tend the vineyards. Together, they hope to develop the Château's untapped potential.

The beautification of the property

Complete vineyard overhaul

Since 1999, the estate has been developing and progressing in terms of quality. This constant work, carried out over several years, has led to unprecedented results.Glana Castleworks tirelessly to fully exploit its potential. All the methods employed on the estate are based on careful consideration. In addition, a complete vineyard overhaul project is underway. In 2003, work began to renovate the entire property. This included a complete redesign of the winery, barrel cellar, offices, and reception area. Furthermore, the grape varieties, planted on Garonne gravel soils, receive meticulous care. All these changes, combined with careful vineyard practices, allow for the production of modern wines. Like theGlana Castleand from its exceptional terroirs, they are elegant and authentic.

A question of balance

Tradition and modernity

Today,Glana CastleIt comprises fifty-nine hectares of vineyards, practically all in one piece. The estate consists of:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon, the typical grape variety of the Médoc, at 65%. It is this grape that gives the wine its structure and its aging potential.
  • MerlotAt 35%, it adds body and roundness to beverages.
  • 6% ofCabernet Franc.

The average age of the vineyards is approximately twenty-five years. They are pruned, their leaves removed, and the vines thinned by hand. The Meffre family also benefited from the expert advice of Professor Denis Dubourdieu and, after his passing, his team. In this way, a judicious balance is established at theGlana CastleIndeed, it is necessary to find a balance between respecting traditions and modern methods. This philosophy allows us to produce balanced, velvety, and complex wines.
