History of the Estate Château Haut-Bergey

the story of Château Haut-Bergey

The excellence of the Pessac-Léognan appellation

Haut-Bergey Castle through the centuries

THEChâteau Haut-Bergeywas born in the 15th century in the heart of the illustrious Bordeaux appellationPessac-LéognanA renowned site in the Graves region. The vineyard reached its maximum area of nearly 100 hectares in the 18th century, when it belonged to Jean-François Cresse. It was subsequently abandoned in the 19th century before being revived in the 1950s.

The estate truly began to take shape as we know it today from 1991 onwards with the arrival ofSylviane Garcin-Cathiard and her husband GastonIndeed, as the sister of Daniel Cathiard, owner of Château Smith Haut-Lafitte, she became the owner of theChâteau Haut-Bergeywith the ambition of revitalizing and modernizing the estate. Twenty years later,Paul GarcinThe couple's son took over the château with the aim of creating an artistic wine that reflected his own sensibilities for music. He also chose to develop theorganic and biodynamic farming.

The choice of biodynamics

The unique expertise of Château Haut-Bergey

The arrival ofPaul Garcinat the head ofChâteau Haut-Bergeymarks a real turning point for the field with the choice that is made to develop theorganic and biodynamic farmingwithin the vineyard. Indeed, according to the philosophy of the team in place, respecting the soil and the vines brings toChâteau Haut-BergeyIts prestigious reputation is evident. Consequently, the soil is cultivated using traditional methods, without any herbicides. The vineyard is managed according to a comprehensive ecological approach to ensure the long-term health of the soil and the environment.

The grape harvest, meanwhile, is done by hand, through successive sorting. Indeed, theorganic and biodynamic farmingconsists of adapting vineyard cultivation to the rhythm of the seasons and lunar cycles, in order to respect the environment as much as possible.biodiversityThe idea is therefore to gradually move away from monoculture, by integrating beehives into the estate, leaving certain plots fallow, etc. With nature at the heart of the process, the use of any chemical inputs is prohibited, and traditional methods are favored. For the managers of theChâteau Haut-BergeyThis conversion allows the wines produced to gain in finesse, freshness, complexity and consequently in quality.
