Bordeaux Supérieur

The Bordeaux Supérieur AOC is a regional appellation, just like the Bordeaux AOC. The red wines produced are made from grape varieties similar to those used in the Bordeaux appellation, namely: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Petit Verdot and Malbec are also cultivated as blending grapes. The white wines, on the other hand, are made from a blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle, and Sauvignon Gris. The red wines of the Bordeaux Supérieur AOC are generally more powerful than Bordeaux wines. The white wines are softer, more aromatic, and more concentrated than Bordeaux AOC wines. The Bordeaux Supérieur AOC regulations stipulate that the wines must be made from old vines and aged for a minimum of nine months before being released for sale.

The Bordeaux Supérieur appellation is a regional AOC . The wines can therefore come from anywhere within the Bordeaux wine region. The specifications are stricter than for the Bordeaux AOC: older vines, lower yields, higher alcohol content, and aging for at least nine months. This appellation includes red and white wines, primarily from areas without a more restricted appellation. The white wines are sweet wines prized for their freshness.
