History of the Estate Michel Redde and Sons

the story of Michel Redde and Sons

The history of the estate

THE REDDE FAMILY

Going back into the past of theRedde familyWe were able to find a winegrower named François Redde, who lived in 1630 inPouilly-sur-LoireThe family has therefore been involved in viticulture for at least8 generationsThe domainMichel Redde and SonsThe winery, as we know it today, dates back to 1930 with the birth of Michel Redde. He decided to become a winemaker to perpetuate the tradition and not leave the vineyard in the hands of the monks, whose responsibility it was at the time. Through hard work and determination, he and his wife Simone restructured and expanded the family property in the 1950s. Ten years later, they opened a winery called “La Moynerie"in homage to the monks, previous farmers of the land. This will allow them to increase their renown and gain visibility in the region."ThierryThe Redde son joined his parents in managing the estate in 1977 and brought his own set of modernizations to both the vineyard and the winery. Finally, today it is the grandchildrenSébastien and Romainwho manage the estate by perpetuating the family tradition of letting the terroir express itself, giving the best it has to offer for each grape variety in each vintage. Today, the La Moynerie estate covers 42 hectares and is cultivated using sustainable viticulture practices to respect both the terroir and the environment, by controlling organic inputs, favoring low yields, soil cultivation, and manual harvesting.

The diversity of the local area

A PARCEL MANAGEMENT

We can definethe Redde familyas true pioneers, the grandfather, the son, and the grandsons alike. Indeed, they each made the choice, in their own time, to opt for avery fragmented managementof the estate, in order to allow the unique character of each terroir that makes up the vineyard to express itself. We can indeed distinguish 3 main parcels:

  • Pouilly-Fumé
  • Pouilly-sur-Loire
  • Saint-Andelain

The Pouilly-Fumé parcel makes up the majority of the vineyard and only certain types of land are found there.Sauvignon BlancIt is located on the magnificentLoire hillsidesfacing due south, with a soilclay-limestoneThe wines produced in this terroir age very well and are best enjoyed after about ten years of aging. They are bothrich in substance, harmonious and elegantThe Pouilly-sur-Loire plot has the distinction of being planted only inChasselas, which is very rare. TheMichel Redde and Sons estateIt is, in fact, one of the last vineyards in the region to plant this type of vine. The Saint-Andelain plot, finally, is located on the Saint-Andelain hill. It has the distinction of having never been cultivated before Michel Redde, who was the first to plant vines there. We can therefore speak of a true visionary, who saw great potential in this clay-siliceous terroir, eventually even bringing it into the...AOC Pouilly-FuméIndeed, thered flintwhich makes up these soils brings ahigh mineralitypure to wines, with finesse and elegance.

Innovation

A THIRST FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Innovation is undoubtedly the term that best characterizes theMichel Redde et Fils estate.Indeed, regardless of the era, each manager has been committed to contributing to the estate's prestige by making their own contribution. Thus, whenThierry ReddeJoining his parents in 1977, he undertook a profound transformation of the winery. He laid it out on three levels, allowing for gravity-flow winemaking. Upon their arrival,Sébastien and Romain ReddeThese will, in turn, contribute to improving the organization of the winery. Since 2009, the family has embarked on a colossal project, which consists of converting aold flint quarryin a new 4-hectare vineyard plot. Furthermore, the planting was entirely carried out using thecrowbarInstead of using a pickaxe, in 2014, the first vintage was produced, logically named “Barre à Mine” (Crowbar). Thus, regardless of the generation at the helm of the estate, respect for tradition combined with perpetual innovation has made this unique vineyard famous.
