History of the Estate Figeac Castle

the story of Figeac Castle

Figeac Castle

18 centuries of history

Château-Figeac was founded in the 2nd century by the Figeacus family, from whom it takes its name. At the time, this family owned the estate, as well as a Gallo-Roman villa on the site of the present-day château. Over the following centuries, Figeac passed through the hands of numerous influential figures, who shaped its development both architecturally and commercially. Following an economic crisis, 130 hectares were sold in 1838 to seven different owners.

In 1892, it was the familyManoncourtwho becomes the owner ofFigeacThis confirms the winemaking vocation of this estate with its exceptional terroir, formed by its three gravelly plots. For over 120 years, the family has forged the unique personality of Château Figeac as we know it today. From the moment the estate was acquired, Figeac was primarily managed by agricultural engineers. Albert Macquin, in particular, was there quite early on, focusing on structuring the vineyard and equipping the winery.

Thierry Manoncourt

the Figeac style

A renewal begins whenThierry ManoncourtHe harvested his first vintage in 1943. Realizing the high potential of this terroir, he convinced his Parisian mother to keep the estate. He then earned a degree in agricultural engineering and dedicated himself to Figeac from 1947 onwards. He cultivated the land with a scientific and innovative approach, preserving only the best traditions while improving technical expertise. His work bore fruit, and in 1955 Château-Figeac becamePremier Grand Cru ClasséThierry Manoncourt gives birth to the “Figeac styleAccompanied by his wife, Marie-France Manoncourt, he made crucial choices, notably the unique and original grape varieties, with their near-equal proportions of 30% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon. Their daughter, Laure, and her husband, Éric d'Aramon, moved to Figeac in the 1980s to help them. Éric became Managing Director until 2012, driving the winery towards a more modern and structured management style.

A complex terroir

specific expertise

Thierry passed away in 2010, having carefully ensured the transmission of his values and skills. He was an agricultural engineer.Frédéric FayeHe had notably joined the Figeac estate in 2002, continuing the scientific approach he had begun. He embraced the cause by exploring the vineyards with Thierry, and became its director in 2013. Marie-France Manoncourt and her daughter, Hortense Idoine Manoncourt, are now dedicated to perpetuating Thierry's spirit and values at the estate.Château-Figeac, relying on the skills of the teams. They are part of a long-term and excellence-driven approach, guaranteeing in particular the continuity of the “Figeac Style”.

Thus, the 40-hectare vineyard is cultivated sustainably and with respect for nature. The cultivation relies on careful observation of the vines, to reveal the best of each vintage and embrace the complexity of the terroir.
