    Located in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, Château Calon Ségur is one of the oldest estates in the Médoc. This 3rd Growth Classified in 1855 takes its name from Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, nicknamed the "Prince of Vines," who declared that his heart was in Calon. The estate is renowned for its wines of great depth, structure, and freshness. Le Marquis de Calon Ségur, the château's second wine, benefits from the same meticulous care as its older sibling, offering a more approachable expression of the exceptional Saint-Estèphe terroir while retaining its own distinct identity.

    The 2019 Marquis de Calon Ségur captivates with its intense purple color and violet highlights. The nose opens with deep aromas of ripe black fruit, cedar, and subtle toasty notes. On the palate, the attack is supple and ample, supported by a silky tannic structure. The fruit blossoms on a well-integrated spicy and oaky base. The finish is long and precise, with an elegant freshness that prolongs the pleasure of the tasting.

    The Calon Ségur vineyard covers 55 hectares in a single block, planted on gravelly slopes resting on a clay-limestone subsoil typical of Saint-Estèphe. This mosaic of soils allows for perfect water regulation and gives the wines their balance and structure. The vines destined for the Marquis are carefully selected, with a majority of Merlot, giving the wine its luscious and charming expression, in keeping with the estate's sustainable farming practices.

    Owner and history

    Since 2012, the estate has belonged to Suravenir Assurances, a subsidiary of Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, which has made significant investments to modernize the facilities while respecting the estate's historical identity. Under the technical direction of Vincent Millet, formerly of Château Margaux, the team implements precision viticulture and meticulous work in the cellar. Their vision: to produce wines that evoke emotion, respectful of the terroir, both powerful and elegant, with remarkable consistency in quality.

    Vinification and aging

    Château Calon Ségur blends tradition and modernity: vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with precise plot-by-plot monitoring. The Marquis de Calon Ségur is then aged for 17 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new, to impart complexity and roundness. This meticulous approach allows the full typicity of the 2019 vintage to be revealed, while preserving a beautiful freshness and harmonious structure from its earliest years.
