Apalta benefits from a north-south exposure, which is quite rare in Chile. The Tinguiririca River flows to the south, while the hills of the Cordillera de la Côte surround the horseshoe-shaped vineyard. Apalta has very old soils, formed mainly during the Cretaceous period from granitic and granodioritic materials. On the hillsides, the soils contain well-decomposed cornerstones; they have a fine to moderate texture and rest on a clay subsoil. In the mid-slope areas and flatter sectors, colluvial deposits and older alluvium from the foothills and the river are found. The texture here is coarser (sandy to sandy-silty) and quartz gravels are also present. Drainage is excellent, and slopes vary from 2 to 15%.

    Owner and history

The story of Clos Apalta is part of one of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère vineyards in Chile, and indeed the world. Nestled in the Colchagua Valley, near the city of Santa Cruz, the Apalta Valley was chosen by a visionary who, in the 1910s, planted this remarkable vineyard using a unique French massal selection. In 1994, Alexandra Marnier-Lapostolle and her husband, Cyril de Bournet, acquired the property. True to the family's values, their ambition was to produce an exceptional wine and pave the way for the qualitative development of the country's great wines. Clos Apalta was created in 1997 as the flagship wine of Domaines Bournet-Apostolle in Chile, with the ambition of showcasing the exceptional terroir of Apalta through French winemaking expertise. By cultivating the vineyard vine by vine and building a state-of-the-art, gravity-flow winery, the family has succeeded in making Clos Apalta is one of the most iconic wines of South America.

    Vinification and aging

Apalta benefits from a meso-climat unique, distinct from that of the rest of the Colchagua Valley. Its climat The climate can be described as semi-arid Mediterranean, characterized by a winter rainy season and a long, dry summer. During the growing season, Apalta benefits from warm temperatures and a lack of rainfall, as the coastal mountain range blocks breezes from the Pacific Ocean. The vineyard enjoys a significant temperature difference between day and night, a key factor in the quality of the color and tannins in the red wines. Slow ripening allows the grapes to reach their ideal maturity, while developing great concentration and character. This promotes the preservation of fruit aromas and maintains high natural acidity, thus ensuring excellent aging potential.
